Iran's Sharif University of Technology has made NiTi-based thin nano-structure films in collaboration with UK's Cambridge University. According to the study published in Vacuum Science and Technology A, these NiTi-based shape memory thin films are made through sputter deposition in a high vacuum furnace (UHV). Ni and Ti elemental powders were used to produce memory NiTi-based thin films; in order to deposit films with high temperature transformation (NiTiHf) however, an Hf target was added to the NiTi deposition system. Research team leader, Sohrab Sanjabi claimed that controlling film composition is one of the benefits of this technique, adding that it is also much less pricey. Sanjabi said that with this method, doubled or tripled NiTi alloys can be made in low, room and even high temperatures. Thin nano films are commonly used in the production of microvalves, micropumps, MEMS, BioMEMS, intelligent microtubules and nanorobots. They are also used in aeronautic industries, medical and tissue engineering, cardiac surgery and orthodency. |
