Iranian director Majid Majidi's new movie The Song of Sparrows has won two awards at the 16th Damascus International Film Festival. Reza Naji took the award for Best Actor and the Iranian movie took the festival's Special Award for its content. The Song of the Sparrows, produced in 2008, tells the story of Karim, who enjoys his work as an ostrich breeder in the countryside near Tehran. He is fired when one of the birds escapes into the hills. Karim begins to encounter problems in his personal life when he has to start commuting to Tehran to look for a job. Naji previously won the Silver Bear award for best actor in a leading role at the prestigious International Berlin Film Festival (Berlinale). The Iranian movie has also been nominated to participate in the foreign film section of the 81st Academy Awards, better known as the Oscars. The Damascus Film Festival held from November 1-11, was judged by an international jury consisting of artists from various countries, including France, Germany and Spain. |
