UNESCO Announces 2008 as Maragheh Observatory Year

Head of astrophysics center of Maragheh (northwest Iran) announced that the year 2008 has been named “Maragheh Observatory” year by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

Dr. Ajabshirizadeh added that Maragheh Observatory is 800 years old and will be reconstructed through allocation of needed credits.

He noted that the project will include preliminary steps to renovate the historical site of the observatory.

“Therefore, a map has been drawn for reconstruction of the site and the project will enjoy international support,” he said.
Ajabshirizadeh stated that the project will lead to reconstruction of the observatory and construction of a new research center.
