The Almighty God has noted in Quran that “When {the Divine victory arrives} you see people accept the God’s religion in groups”. After the auspicious start of his prophethood, Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) lived for 13 years in Mecca before immigrating to Medina, where he lived for 10 years. During 13 years of endeavors in Mecca, about 200 people adopted Islam as their religion, though there are differences about that figure.

After converting 200 men and women to Islam, Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) went to Medina and lived there for 10 years. There is no accurate figure on the number of converts in Medina, but it is known that in the ninth year after his immigration to Medina an average of 200 men and women accepted Islam per day.

Why during 13 years in Mecca only 200 people became Muslim while in Medina a similar number accepted Islam per day? There was no difference between Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) in Mecca and Medina and divine revelations were also the same in both places. One reason is that Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) was not free in Mecca and dictatorship of Quraish did not let his religion thrive. Secondly, once in Mecca, people knew nothing about how the prophet will treat people, captives, friends and relatives. They knew nothing about his monetary policies or his policies in war. But in Medina, they knew all that.

Our responsibility at this time

Two examples will clarify our responsibility at the present time. The first example pertains to Saffaneh, the daughter of Hatam Taei, who was taken into captivity in a war and brought to Prophet Mohammad (PBUH). She told him, “I am daughter of a generous man who loved patients.” She meant that she did not deserve to be a captive. Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) asked her to choose a trustee to accompany her.

Some books have noted that Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) even forgave all those who were related to her. The daughter of Hatam then told her brother, “Go to this man. He is not a king, but a prophet.”
When her brother Oudai learnt about the kind behavior of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH), he went to him and accepted his faith. He fought for Islam along Imam Ali (AS) in such wars as Jamal, Seffin, and Nahrowan.

God has also noted in Quran that “you will find that Jews and infidels hate the faithful most.” He has mentioned Jews and infidels as the biggest enemies of Muslims though most wars waged against him were from infidels and not Jews.

The wars of Badr, Uhud, and Seffin were waged by infidels while in the war of Ahzab; there were also Jews and Christians. However, God has introduced Jews as the most intransigent foes of Islam. The point is that even those intransigent enemies accepted Islam as a result of Prophet Mohammad’s (PBUH) behavior. Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) had announced three laws in relation to financial and monetary matters. He said, “He who dies and leaves a fortune, it would belong to his/her heirs.” That is, he did not consider any tax on bequest. He also said, “Those who die and leave a debt or an orphan, I will take care of them.” This item includes the second and third laws.

The second law was that if somebody died and owed people without leaving money for his debt to be repaid, creditors should not bother his wife and children, even if they have money, but should ask Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) for their money. He said, “They should come to me and I’ll pay them the money.”

The third law was that if some body has died leaving orphans behind, Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) would take care of them. Imam Sadeq (AS) has been quoted in the book, al-Kafi, as saying that this law was the reason why most Jews converted to Islam. Since Jews cared for money, they saw that Islamic law was to their benefit because they did not have to pay tax on their money and if they died moneyless, Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) would have taken care of their debts and their orphans. This behavior was manifested in Medina and there was no room in Mecca for Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) to show the true nature of his teachings. Therefore, by the ninth year in Medina, every day, more than 200 people converted to Islam as a result of freedom that Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) had to inform people about Islam.

Freedoms and facilities should be used to promote Islam

Today, some countries are freer than others. In other words, the main factor which helped Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) invite people to Islam does exist now. The second factor is endeavors to be made by the faithful.

True and false Islam

The most important point is how to inform people about true Islam because there are false varieties of Islam which are blended with bigotry and have presented a skewed picture of Islam in the eye of people. We see that suicide bombers are killing hundreds of innocent women and children and other civilians by wrapping explosives around their bodies and exploding them at various places. This is false Islam and what non-Muslims have is much better than that.

The best publicity for Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) and Islam is to demonstrate practical steps taken by Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) and his progeny. If Prophet Mohammad’s (PBUH) conduct is shown to non-Muslims, including his respect for civil laws, human rights, social justice, mercy, and humane behavior, even enemies of Islam will be attracted to it.

If we used satellites, Internet, as well as billions of books and magazines to promote demeanor of the prophet and our Infallible Imams, people would accept the divine religion of Islam in groups and tens of millions of them would convert to Islam.

This is a task for all of us, including women, men, scholars, businesspeople, and other social groups to inform the world about the true words of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) and Imam Ali (AS) by taking advantage of all means.
