New Model for Calculating “Neutron Importance”

Researchers at Nuclear Engineering and Physics Department of Amir Kabir University of Technology have successfully presented a new model for calculating neutron importance factor in the new generation of nuclear reactors.

Seyed Amir Hossein Feqhi, a doctorate student in nuclear engineering and in charge of the project, has noted that designing the new generation of nuclear reactors is a hot topic for scientific research in the world. He added that the reactors are designed in such a way as to be able to consume nuclear waste from power plants as fuel and in addition to producing energy, convert them from high radiation to low radiation state.

He noted that to get attuned to international research centers and to gain command of this knowledge, separate studies have been carried out at Nuclear Engineering and Physics Department of Amir Kabir University of Technology under the supervision of Dr. Hossein Afarideh. Part of those studies included model making and designing core of new generation reactors as well as optimizing some variables.

Feqhi also noted that an innovation by Iranian researchers was to come up with a method to calculate one of the key variables of those reactors, which has been then registered in the world in the name of the Iranian researchers.

He noted that the variable was called “neutron importance” on which determination of other core variables of the reactor heavily depended.

Thus far, a number of scientific papers about the studies have been published in creditable nuclear science magazines and, for this reason, Seyed Amir Hossein Feqhi has been chosen as a judge of papers in the field by Annual Energy magazine.

According to a program envisaged by the European Union, the first real sample of these reactors will be made operational in 2016 in order to study their efficiency.
