Iranian Scientist Wins ISESCO Award

Active ImageIranian scientist Hossein Baharvand has received the 2010 ISESCO award in biology for his achievements in the field of stem cell technology.

Dr. Baharvand, who is currently the associate professor and head of the Department of Stem Cell and Developmental Biology at Iran's Royan Institute, established the first mouse and human embryonic stem cells in Iran in 2003.

His team also generated several human embryonic and induced pluripotent stem cells in 2008, which enabled them to explore many avenues of research into methods of generating therapeutic cells from stem cells.

Baharvand has published 78 international and 83 national peer-reviewed papers, as well as four chapters in international books and nine books in Persian.

He is also the editor of the 2009 book Trends in Stem Cell Biology and Technology which covers studies on spermatogonial stem cells, uniparental embryonic stem cell lines, the generation of gametes from stem cells, reprogramming germ cells to stem cells, nuclear and somatic cell genetic reprogramming, tissue engineering and mechanotransduction of stem cells and the development of stem cell technology for the treatment of deafness, heart disease, corneal injury and diabetes.

This year's ISESCO award in Chemistry went to Dr. Ulmas Mirsaidov from Tajikistan, while Prof. Dr. M Qassim Jan from Pakistan won the ISESCO award in Geology.

Prof. Dr. Zaid Odibat from Jordan, Prof. Dr. Mohammed M Shabat from Gaza and Prof. Dr. Mohamed Amin Embi from Malaysia received the award in mathematics, physics and technology respectively.

The Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) was established by the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) in 1979.

Based in Rabat, Morocco, ISESCO is one of the largest international Islamic organizations specializing in the fields of education, science, and culture.

The organization aims to enhance, promote and consolidate cooperation among OIC member states and contribute to the achievement of world peace and security, particularly through education, science, culture and communication.
