Iran's Share of the Caspian Sea Resources

Wednesday, January 2, 2008

Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said that Iran's share of the Caspian Sea resources has never been over 50 percent.

He further rejected certain claims in the past that Iran had had 50 percent of the Caspian share in the past.

Such remarks were made by enemies of the Iranian nation and those who were concerned about Iran's role in the regional relations, he added.

Iran's exploitation of the Caspian Sea has never been higher than 11.3 percent, Mottaki said.

Referring to compilation of the Caspian Sea legal regime, he said compilation of the sea's legal regime is on the agenda of Iran, Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan.

"Share of each of the three countries is based on justice as well as determining the underwater borders for utilization of the sea's resources," Mottaki noted.

Kazakhstan's share of the Caspian Sea is 24 percent and that of Russia is under 20, he said, adding that Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan each has less than a 20 percent share.
