Foreign Ministry Spokesman Hosseini says based on the principle of equity, Iran is entitled to a 20-percent share of the Caspian Sea.

Mohammad-Ali Hosseini added that Iran has always striven to receive its rightful share and would never withdraw from its position on the issue.

"The legal regime of the Caspian Sea will be determined on the basis of the principle of fairness, which has a special legal and technical definition in the international law," he said.

He stated that efforts had been made during the Soviet era to impose a limited percentage of the sea's share on Iran.

"But this figure has not been recorded in any agreement and Iran has never accepted it," he explained.
