Iran condemns new US sanctions

Monday, October 29, 2007

Islamic Republic's Permanent Mission to the United Nations has issued a statement condemning the US unilateral sanctions against Tehran.

"The United State's newly-unveiled illegal measures against Iranian nationals as well as military, financial and other institutions once again disclosed the US unilateral approach which is doomed to failure due to its illegitimate and hegemonic nature," the statement said, in reaction to a new set of sanctions against the Islamic Republic announced by the US on Oct. 25, 2007.

"Without doubt, labeling independent countries and their national institutions as terrorist runs counter to the most basic principles of international law, international relations and the UN Charter," it added.

It is clear that despite the massive misleading political and propaganda campaign organized by the US and its proxies, the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) is a crucial component of Iran's military force. In fact, by sanctioning the popular IRGC, the US is targeting the entire Iranian nation," the statement noted.

"As recurrently reaffirmed by the International Atomic Energy Agency officials and reports, Iran's nuclear program is completely peaceful and there is no evidence of the slightest diversion from a peaceful path. The US has failed to provide any evidence to substantiate its 'proliferation concerns' over Iran's nuclear activities."

The mission stressed that Iran is first and foremost a victim of terrorist activities perpetrated by terrorist groups which have been created, financed and supported by the US, adding allegations of 'support for terrorism' leveled against certain Iranian entities or nationals are entirely baseless and Iran has always condemned terrorism in all its forms and manifestations.

At a time when there is a high level of cooperation between Iran and the IAEA and the international community favors negotiating a diplomatic solution to the stand-off, the US unilateral move well indicates that it seeks to undermine the negotiations and cooperation in this regard, the statement said, adding the politically-motivated move disrespects other key international players.

Instead of welcoming the positive atmosphere created thanks to the progressive Iran-IAEA cooperation, the US seeks to impose unilateral sanctions against Iran to damage talks over the country's peaceful nuclear program.
