Iran Launches 1st Reactor Producing Focal Plasma

Saturday, April 19, 2008

A professor of nuclear engineering at Amir Kabir University of Technology has announced that university researchers have successfully made the first reactor producing focal plasma operational. The new reactor has special functions and has been totally manufactured inside the country.

Dr. Reza Amrollahi, dean of Nuclear Engineering and Physics Faculty of Amir Kabir University of Technology who has also headed the research team manufacturing the reactor has noted that the project has been carried out as a thesis for doctorate degree in nuclear engineering and has banked on the scientific capacities of pulse plasma technology. It has taken about four years and has been carried out through financial support of Radiation Process Research Institute of Amir Kabir University of Technology.

He added that the focal plasma reactor has been made operational at nuclear fusion laboratories of Nuclear Engineering and Physics Faculty of Amir Kabir University of Technology, saying, “Focal plasma reactor carries out magnetic encircling of plasma and leads to nuclear fusion and light nuclear fusion of hydrogen and its isotopes.”

The university professor maintains that after nuclear fusion reactors, focal reactors are the second series of equipment producing powerful neutron radiation.

Amrollahi also stated that in view of existing potentials at Iranian universities and research centers and huge budget used for experimental research on nuclear fusion, the research team producing focal plasma equipment has based its work for manufacturing focal plasma redactor on technical and economic feasibility tests.

Dean of Nuclear Engineering and Physics Faculty of Amir Kabir University of Technology also stated that the new reactor will pave the way for more research on dynamic theoretical studies on dense plasma, experimental study of neutron spectra as well as soft and hard X-ray. He added that the above studies are currently underway by a team of doctorate and master’s degree students of the faculty.
