Iran Urges Continuation of Ceasefire in Syria

Tuesday, March 29, 2016

Iran's President Hassan Rouhani has called for the continuation of ceasefire in Syria and acceleration of political negotiations to end a foreign-backed war that has gripped the Arab country for over five years.

“Concurrent with the ceasefire, political negotiations should speed up and it should be noted that this truce and political negotiations should not disrupt the relentless campaign against terrorists and terrorist groups in Syria,” Rouhani said.

He added that cooperation and consultation among Iran and Russia would play a leading role in consolidating peace and stability in Syria.

“Only the Syrian people can decide about Syria and the future of the country’s political system,” Rouhani said.

He hailed the Syrian government forces’ recapture of the ancient city of Palmyra from the Daesh terrorist group, saying it indicates that the Syrian army and people have become stronger.

The Iranian president said protecting borders and blocking the flow of arms and terrorist recruits into Syria as well as preventing terrorists from participating in Syria peace talks under the aegis of the opposition are “undeniable necessities.”

The Iranian President also said boosting defense capabilities is a “strategic policy” of the Islamic Republic while Tehran should be wary of not providing its enemies with any “excuse.”

“We’ll pursue any measure to boost our defense might and this is a strategic policy,” Rouhani said.

“But at the same time we should remain vigilant so that Iran’s enemies do not find any excuse” to abuse the country’s capabilities, said the president.

Rouhani referred to the nuclear deal between Iran and the world powers, saying Zionists in the US, Europe, and the Middle East want to sabotage the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.

President Rouhani described “hope in future and trust in the government” as an “asset” to the country that should be taken care of.

Iran’s security in the “chaotic” region is an outcome a good relation between the government and the nation, Rouhani noted.

He was referring to the Takfiri militancy and terrorist bombings that have gripped several countries in the Middle East.
