IRISL Ranks First in Terms of Commercial and Tanker Fleet

The Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines has ranked first in terms of having the biggest commercial and tanker fleet in the Middle East.

Managing Director of the Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines, Mohammad Hossein Dajmar, noted that the shipping lines runs the biggest commercial and tanker fleet in the Middle East which comprises of 131 vessels with a total capacity of 3.8 million tons.

He added that IRISL fleet can handle 50 percent of Iran’s imports and exports and is currently handling 30 percent of all import and export operations in the Iranian ports.

Dajmar further noted that the company has signed a contract to buy 53 vessels with a total capacity of 2.6 million tons at the cost of 2.25 billion dollars, adding, “Some 42 ships have been purchased by the Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines and the remaining ships have been bought by its subsidiaries and would be delivered to the company by 2010.”

Referring to Iran’s small share of marine transport in the Caspian Sea, the official noted that the Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines is to increase the number of its ships in the Caspian Sea to 10 vessels, which would be capable of transporting 52,000 tons of cargo.
