Hassan Karimzadeh Wins 1st Award of World Press Cartoon 2008

The fourth international festival of world press cartoons called World Press Cartoon 2008 (WPC) awarded prizes to winners in the tourism resort city of Sintra, Portugal. During the event Iranian cartoonist, Hassan Karimzadeh, won the first prize of Gag Cartoon section for his cartoon which was published in Etemad Melli daily on October 17, 2007.

Some 367 newspapers and magazines from 67 countries had taken part in the competition. Iran’s Etemad Melli, Indonesia’s Compass, and Serbia’s Political, accounted for the highest number of participants in the festival.

About 766 works by 395 cartoonists had been accepted to the international competition section of the festival. Cartoons drawn by the Iranian cartoonists Amin Roshanpour, Hadi Heidari, Hamid Reza Mosayyebi, Hassan Karimzadeh, Homayoun Abdolrahimi, Javad Alizadeh, Mohammad Ali Khonji, Keyvan Zargari, Mehdi Karimzadeh, Mahmoud Nazari, Massoud Ziyaei Zardkhashouei, Mohammad Amin Aqaei, Saeed Sadeqi, Hossein Safi, Shahram Rezaei, Shahrokh Heidari and Yahya Tadayyon had been accepted to the festival and will be printed in the festival’s book.

The 403 participating cartoons had been divided in 3 different categories: editorial cartoon, gag cartoon, and caricature.

This is the first edition of World Press Cartoon festival in which an Iranian cartoonist has succeeded to win a prize.
