Saturday, May 31, 2008

Dr. Abili, a neurosurgeon at Imam Ali (AS) Hospital of Zahedan in Sistan and Baluchestan province has announced that for the first time in Iran, a lumbar disk has been operated via endoscopy.

He has mentioned shorter surgical incision, rapid recovery and discharge of patient, reduced pain, and decreased movement restriction as major advantages of the new method.

The doctor added that when using endoscopy, unlike usual methods, no damage is done to most tissues around posterior processes as well as ligaments and other elements near lumbar vertebrae.

In endoscopic method, the surgeon approaches posterior parts of the spinal cord and removes minimum amount of ligaments and posterior part of lumbar vertebra without damaging flexible structure of the spinal cord. Then the damaged vertebral disk is taken out and patient’s symptoms are eliminated. This method entails the least possible complications.

Three male patients have been treated using this method since one month ago and their general conditions are satisfactory.
