She has been chosen through interviews from among Iranian students to take part in the two-week program as the first Iranian woman to visit Antarctica.

Airin Shivaei left Tehran for Paris on Monday, December 24, 2007 to join the group before traveling on to Argentina. From Buenos Aires in Argentina, she traveled to the southernmost city of the world, Ushuaia, in order to join the group of students, which will visit the Antarctica.

Students on Ice is an educational program aimed at introducing north and south poles to students and helping them to conduct scientific research on such issues as global warming. During the current year’s mission, 64 students will be accompanied by 25 scientists and guides from across the world.

Thus far, four Iranians have visited the South Pole, including Babak Amin Tafreshi and Hamid Jadiri Khodashenas who went there to observe a solar eclipse.
