Diversionary Meeting

The joint meeting of 5+1 with diplomats from Arab countries in New York (Dec. 16) was a diversionary meeting overlooking the realities in the region. The event initiated by Washington only underlines the fact that the Americans intend to prolong the crisis by resorting to old schemes.

The New York meeting is considerable from two aspects: First, the Americans in the `Greater Middle East’ plan they presented a few years ago inserted a cause for blackmailing the Arabs. They announced that one of their goals was promotion of democracy in the Arab world which caused some challenge between the US and the Arab states. However, after some time, the two sides reached agreement that Washington should continue to remain indifferent towards democratization in Arab countries in return for the latter’s support for America’s Israeli-oriented policy.

The Arabs also gave in to the US demand that they should support the false threats the Americans are pursuing in the region. The US aim behind this compromise was to keep the Arabs away from the realities of the region. In fact, from the 1970s onward and after the Arab-Israeli wars, the Americans have been creating various issues for the Arabs in order to turn the main problem of the region, namely Israel into a secondary issue.

Right under conditions that the Zionist regime is committing crimes against humanity and must be convicted at political and legal courts, Arabs organize an inter-faith conference in America with the mediation of a major Arab state to provide Arabs with an excuse to get closer to the officials of the Zionist regime.

This time again, the West and the US are trying to distract the Arabs from the crimes of the Zionist regime by involving them in the 5+1 talks and to portray Iran’s nuclear program as a main issue in the region. Therefore, we realize that the biggest support for diversionary strategies in the region comes from heads of those Arab states, who enjoy the least political legitimacy in their countries.

Secondly, the Western countries and the US know that Iran is a country with 14 sea and land borders, is located on a transit route and sanctions against it would not be as easy as sanctions against Iraq and other countries. As a result, they are trying to regionalize the international sanctions against IRI by involving certain Arab governments in the 5+1 talks.

The Islamic Republic of Iran has formally informed Arab countries through its political officials that any achievement in the nuclear area would belong to the Islamic world and that Tehran is ready to provide them with its accomplishments within a consortium or through bilateral relations.

After the Iraqi imposed war (1980-88), the IRI is the only country which has become stronger compared with the past. Instead, the concerns of other countries in the region have increased and their security indexes decreased. During the 8 years of the Bush militarism, the US thought Iran would become a target of this militarism. But we practically saw that not only Iran did not become a target but in its last years in power it was the Bush administration which begged for Iran’s assistance in Iraq.

The truth is that no strategy in the region has been successful with IRI having no part in it. In other words, the IRI has been the missing chain in the regional strategies, a reality certain Arab countries overlooked when they attended the 5+1 meet in New York this month.
