Bani-Etemad Receives Honorary Doctorate from University of London

The University of London awarded an honorary doctorate to Iranian filmmaker Rakhshan Bani-Etemad during a ceremony on July 22.

A Bani-Etemad retrospective sponsored by the British Film Institute (BFI), the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), the Insight Institute, and the Iran Heritage Foundation, was held in London from April 7 to 30.

The Insight Institute also organized a series of master classes held by Bani-Etemad during the program.

"Off-Limits" (1986) is the debut film by the 54-year-old filmmaker, who is certainly the leading female contemporary filmmaker in Iran. She centers social and political themes in her films.

Her credits include "Canary Yellow," "Foreign Currency," "Nargess," "The Blue-Veiled," "The May Lady," "Under the Skin of the City," and "Mainline".

She is also director several short and documentary films such "Baran and the Native," "Our Times," and "To Whom Will You Show These Films Anyway?"
