Active Image*Iranian filmmaker Peyman Haqani's Man Who Ate His Cherries has been awarded at the 4th edition of Russia's Zerkalo International Film Festival.

The 77-minute film won the Guild of Film Critics award of the event, held from May 24 to 30, 2010.

A Man Who Ate His Cherries is Haqani's first feature-length production and depicts the complications and problems faced by a divorced man.

Haqani started his cinematic career by making his first short film, Cell No. 3, in 2001. He has also made documentaries and cooperated with many famous Iranian filmmakers as editor and director of photography.

The Grand Prix of this year's Zerkalo festival went to Forbidden Fruit, directed by Cyprus-born, Finland-based director Dome Karukoski.

The best director award of the event was granted to South Korea's Soo-il Jeon for his Himalaya, Where the Wind Dwells.

The Zerkalo International Film Festival is named after a film by Russian filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky and is held annually to commemorate the world-renowned director.

Active Image*“Macondo”, an Iranian play directed by Azadeh Ansari received the Imatra Award in the Puppet Section at the 7th International Black and White Theatre Festival.

The festival was held from May 25 to 29 in Imatra, Finland with the theme of “To be or not to be”.

“Macondo”, which was performed in English, competed at the gala with works from different countries including Russia, Sweden, Denmark, France, and Australia.

“The secretary of the festival proposed a joint performance by Iran, Finland and Azerbaijan and we are still deciding about this proposal,” Ansari said.

Written by Arash Parsakhu and directed by Ansari, “Macondo” is an adaptation of “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings” by Gabriel Garcia Marquez.

The play features the story of a supernatural being in the form of an old man who arrives in an imaginary town, and the strange events that subsequently take place that influence the lives of the residents.

Active Image*Two Iranian caricaturists have claimed the second and the third place at the sixth international cartoon competition held in the Syrian capital of Damascus.

Payam Pourfallah and Mahmoud Nazari collected the silver and bronze medals respectively at the international contest.

More than 400 cartoonists from 76 countries are reported to have participated in the event.

Celebrated Polish cartoonist Slawomir Luczynski claimed first place at Syria's 2010 cartoon contest.

"Iranian artists have almost always been successful at these competitions," Raed Khalil, the director of the contest, said.

"Iranian cartoonists have their own artistic schools which produce mostly influential works reflecting Iran's brilliant history in the field," he added.

Active Image*Dr. Negar Farakish, Assistant Dean of Developmental Education at Westchester Community College, received the National Association for Developmental Education (NADE) Outstanding Thesis/Dissertation Award. Her doctorial dissertation, Educating the Academically Underprepared, was prepared at Teachers College, Columbia University.

Dr. Farakish holds a doctorate degree in Higher and Post-secondary Education, an Education Specialist Degree in English, a Master of Arts in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), and a Bachelor of Arts in English Translation. In 2008, under the direction and guidance of her advisor, Dr. Anna Neumann, at Teachers College, Columbia University, Negar completed her doctoral dissertation.

A developmental education practitioner, she has considerable experience in the field. Her familiarity with the challenges faced by instructors in meeting the academic and non-academic needs of their students motivated her to research the practices of developmental reading/writing instructors. In her dissertation study, she focused on a group of instructors who were credited with success in teaching reading/writing at their institutions. She captured their pedagogical and professional development practices, providing a window into the views, experiences, and promising practices of these successful instructors.
