20 Iranian Scientists among Top Researchers

According to the latest report issued by the creditable Institute for Scientific Information (ISI), 20 Iranian scientists have been shortlisted among “international scientists” (top researchers) in view of the number of times they have been cited in scientific papers.

The Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) issues a list of top scientists, countries, institutes and magazines on the basis of the number of scientific papers produced by them and the number of times that they have been cited in such papers. During its latest report, which covers a period from January 1997 to October 31, 2007, the institute has mentioned required number of papers in which scientists should be cited at 839 for chemistry and 239 for engineering.

Prominent researcher (scientist) is a nickname used for assessment of scientists who are highly cited in scientific papers related to their field and are listed among one percent top researcher of the world.

At present, 20 top Iranian scientists who have been introduced by ISI include: Dr. Eslami in mechanical engineering, Dr. Habib Firouzabadi in organic chemistry, Dr. Nasser Iranpour in organic chemistry, Dr. Shadpour Malekpour in organic chemistry, Dr. Issa Yavari in organic chemistry, Dr. Mohammad Reza Ganjali in analytical chemistry, Dr. Abdolreza Hajipour in organic chemistry, Dr. Majid Heravi in organic chemistry, Dr. Iraj Mohammadpour in organic chemistry, Dr. Hashem Sharqi in organic chemistry, Dr. Mohammad Reza Zarrindast in pharmaceutics, Dr. Mohammad Ali Zolfigol in organic chemistry, Dr. Mojtaba Shamsipour in analytical chemistry, Dr. Massoud Salavati Niasari in mineral chemistry, Dr. Parviz Norouzi in analytical chemistry, Dr. Shahram Tangestani-nejad in mineral chemistry, Dr. Mirfazlollah Mousavi in analytical chemistry, Dr. Ali Asghar Ensafi in analytical chemistry, Dr. Mehdi Dehqan in applied mathematics and Dr. Babak Karimi in organic chemistry. Of course, ISI updates its report every two months and some people are erased from the list while others are added.

Dr. Shamsipour, Dr. Ganjali and Dr. Zolfigol are at the top of the list of highly cited Iranian researchers.

It should be noted that Iran has ranked the 40th in terms of number of papers in all scientific fields and has ranked 47th in the world in terms of indexed citations from January 1, 1997 to October 31, 2007.

The number of indexed scientific productions by Iranians, as mentioned by ISI, has totaled 9,065 in 2007. Therefore, Iran’s scientific ranking in terms of total scientific productions in the last year has improved by seven grades compared to 2006 to hit 30th in the world.
