The Physics Society of Iran (PSI) has become a member of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP). A new type of magnetic nanoparticles of Fe3O4 was synthesized at Tarbiat Modarres University (TMU) in Iran. Researchers at Tehran University’s Faculty of Science, in collaboration with their colleagues at Iran’s Stem Cell Technology Research Center, exploited nanofibrous scaffolds for bone tissue engineering applications. Active ImageThe British Society for Middle Eastern Studies (BRISMES) has awarded its 2010 Book Prize to Iranian professor Touraj Daryaei for his book on Sassanid Persia. Iran’s Mohammadreza Vatandust was awarded for his film “When the Lemon Turns Yellow” at the Tirana International Film Festival in Albania. Iranian director Mohsen Abdolvahab and actress Kobra Hassanzadeh Esfahani won two awards at the 7th Dubai Film Festival this year.

Active ImageThe Iranian documentary “One Day Full of Pain” was selected as the Best Documentary Film at the Skena Up International Students Film and Theater Festival. Iranian religious-themed blockbuster “The Kingdom of Solomon” took the first-place award at Iraq’s Jewar Film Festival, picking up two prizes including best movie and director. The 2010 edition of the Asia Pacific Screen Awards (APSA) has awarded The Other, a feature-length film directed by Iran's Mehdi Rahmani. Iranian actor Hamid Farrokhnejad has been awarded at the 2010 Asia Pacific Film Festival in Taiwan. An Iranian movie depicting a US soldier accidentally shooting a little girl during a raid on her home in Iraq has officially entered for the 2011 Academy Awards.

Active ImageTUMS Researchers have produced a drug for treating and preventing diabetic neuropathy, microangiopathy and diabetic and non-diabetic ulcers and wound injection. Iranian researchers have produced a variation of anti-cancer, inulin powder through extraction of inulin from local plants by means of ultrasound waves. Iranian researcher Mohammad Reza Shariat-Gorji from Stockholm University won the award for the best PhD thesis in biomedical and pharmaceutical analysis in Sweden in 2010. Pouria Ghods has been named the recipient of the Electrochemical Society Corrosion Division’s 2010 Morris Cohen Graduate Student Award. Iranian graphic designer Mohammad Jamshidi has been awarded in the cultural category of the 2010 edition of the International Poster Biennial of Mexico. Iranian illuminator Mostafa Aqamiri has been invited to hold Persian art workshops at Shanghai University, one of China's most prestigious academic centers. Iranian filmmaker Mohsen Abdolvahab's Please Do Not Disturb has been awarded at the 2010 edition of the Damascus International Film Festival.

Active ImageAccording to the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI), Iran increased its academic publishing output nearly tenfold from 1996 to 2004, and has been ranked first globally in terms of output growth rate. Iran, China, India and Brazil are the only developing countries among 31 nations with 97.5% of the world's total scientific productivity. A 2010 report by Canadian research firm Science-Metrix has put Iran in the top rank globally in terms of growth in scientific productivity with a 14.4 growth index followed by South Korea with a 9.8 growth index. The report further notes that Iran's scientific capability build-up has been the fastest in the past two decades.
