Iran’s scientific community has been placed in the 15th place in the Scopus ranking to date, which represents a breakthrough for the country’s scientific establishment. Iranian students managed to stood 4th in the 24th International Biology Olympiad, wining two gold and two silver medals. The first and most important facial reconstruction surgery in Iran which lasted for nearly 5 hours ended with successful results. Iranian students stood 6th in the 2013 International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI), wining 4 gold, silver and bronze medals. Iranian students won several medals in the 44th International Physics Olympiad in Copenhagen, Denmark capital city, including 3 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze medals. Academy Award-winning director Asghar Farhadi’s new smash hit drama The Past has won the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury at the 2013 Cannes International Film Festival. The jury of the 16th Cinéfondation Selection, headed by Jane Campion, announced “Neddle” directed by Iranian director Anahita Ghazvinizadeh as the winner of the 1st prize for best student film at the 66th Cannes Film Festival. Iranian calligraphers have received numerous awards at the 9th International Calligraphy Competition held in the Turkish city of Istanbul. Iranian filmmaker Reza Mirkarimi’s acclaimed dramatic comedy A Cube of Sugar has won at the 4th Ibn Arabi International Film Festival (IBAFF) in Spain.The Babel Med Music is slated to dedicate the 2013 France Musique World Music Award to the Iranian musician and vocalist Mohammad Motamedi. Iranian filmmaker Mohammad Shirvani’s “Fat Shaker”, about a stern patriarch, has won one of the three Hivos Tiger Awards at the 42nd International Film Festival Rotterdam. Member of the 15th Khordad Hospital surgery team has successfully completed hand transplant surgery during 8.5 hours of breathtaking procedure. The BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Award for Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) has been granted in this fifth edition to electrical engineer Lotfi A. Zadeh, “for the invention and development of fuzzy logic”. Twelve researchers and 11 innovators, among whom an Iranian ophthalmologist, were awarded the most prestigious US federal medal in science, technology, and innovation. “Final Whistle”, an Iranian drama on social and private life interactions, was crowned best film at the International Film Festival Mannheim-Heidelberg in Germany. “The Rooster Trademark Paper” by the Iranian director Maryam Milani won a special prize at the Chicago International Children’s Film Festival. The Iranian film “The Last Days of Winter” won top prize at the Escales Documentaires, an international documentary festival, which was held from November 5 to 13 in La Rochelle, France. Iranian Mechatronics Research Laboratory (MRL) of Islamic Azad University of Qazvin won the RoboCup rescue simulation contest. Iranian researchers have developed a new radiopharmaceutical medicine suggested to be effective in treating patients suffering from breast cancer.
